Cabbage Beef Bake

A hearty and comforting dish of savory ground beef, layers of tender cabbage, and creamy tomato sauce, topped with melted Swiss cheese.

Ingredients

  • 1 small cabbage, shredded
  • 1 ½ lbs lean ground beef (or lean ground turkey)
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • ½ cup chopped red bell pepper
  • 1 (15 ounce) can diced tomatoes, undrained
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon pepper
  • ½ teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon caraway seed
  • 1 (8 ounce) can tomato sauce
  • 1 cup reduced-fat sour cream
  • 1 cup shredded Swiss cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Lightly grease a deep 13 x 9 baking dish.
  3. Place shredded cabbage in the bottom of the baking dish.
  4. Brown ground beef (or turkey) with chopped onion and red bell pepper. Drain fat.
  5. Add diced tomatoes, salt, pepper, sugar, and caraway seeds. Stir to combine.
  6. Blend tomato sauce and sour cream in a bowl, then spread over the beef mixture.
  7. Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 1 hour.
  8. Uncover and sprinkle Swiss cheese on top. Bake for an additional 15-20 minutes until cheese is bubbly.

Notes

Consider adding breadcrumbs on top for extra crunch or adjusting the spices to suit your taste.
