Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 ½ pounds lean ground beef
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 green bell pepper, finely chopped (optional)
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon mustard (yellow or Dijon)
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon smoked paprika (optional)
  • Hamburger buns
  • Pickles or cheese (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef until fully cooked, approximately 5-7 minutes. Drain any excess fat.
  2. Transfer the browned beef to a slow cooker. Add chopped onion, optional green bell pepper, and minced garlic.
  3. In a medium bowl, mix together ketchup, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, apple cider vinegar, mustard, salt, black pepper, and smoked paprika.
  4. Pour the sauce over the meat and vegetables in the slow cooker; stir to combine.
  5. Cover and cook on low for 4–6 hours or on high for 2–3 hours.
  6. Once cooked, stir the mixture and spoon onto warm hamburger buns. Optionally add pickles or cheese.

Notes

For added flavor, consider browning the ground beef with spices like cumin or chili powder. Serve on toasted buns to keep them from becoming soggy.
