A comforting dish featuring tender ground beef simmered in savory broth topped with fluffy dumplings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef (85 percent lean)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 and 1/2 cups beef broth
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Optional: 1/2 cup frozen peas or mixed vegetables
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour (for dumplings)
  • 1 and 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup milk (whole or 2 percent)

Instructions

  1. Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add the ground beef and brown until no longer pink. Drain excess fat.
  2. Add the diced onion and sauté until soft and translucent, about 4 minutes.
  3. Stir in minced garlic and cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
  4. Add the tomato paste and sprinkle flour over the mixture, stirring to combine.
  5. Pour in the beef broth gradually while stirring to prevent lumps. Add thyme, paprika, salt, and pepper.
  6. Let the mixture simmer on low heat for 8 to 10 minutes until thickened.
  7. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt for dumplings. Work in softened butter until it resembles coarse crumbs.
  8. Stir in the milk until the dough comes together but remains sticky.
  9. Drop tablespoons of the dumpling dough on top of the beef mixture, aiming for 6 to 8 dumplings.
  10. Cover the skillet and reduce heat to low. Allow dumplings to steam for about 15 minutes.
  11. Check dumplings for doneness and let the dish stand uncovered for 5 minutes before serving hot.

Notes

Consider adding sautéed mushrooms or bell peppers for extra flavor. Serve with a side salad or garlic bread.
