A hearty and comforting dish featuring tender ground beef simmered in savory broth with fluffy dumplings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef (85 percent lean)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 and 1/2 cups beef broth
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1/2 cup frozen peas or mixed vegetables (optional)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour (for dumplings)
  • 1 and 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt (for dumplings)
  • 1 tablespoon butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup milk (whole or 2 percent)

Instructions

  1. Begin by browning the ground beef in a large skillet over medium heat until it’s no longer pink. If using leaner beef, make sure to drain any excess fat.
  2. Next, sauté the diced onion in the same skillet until it becomes soft and translucent, about four minutes. Stir in the minced garlic and let it cook for another minute until fragrant.
  3. Mix in the tomato paste, allowing it to cook for a minute, then sprinkle the flour over the beef mixture and stir well.
  4. Gradually pour in the beef broth while stirring continuously to avoid lumps. Add thyme, paprika, salt, and pepper, letting it simmer for 8 to 10 minutes until the broth thickens slightly.
  5. Meanwhile, prepare the dumplings. In a bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Add in the softened butter and mix until coarse. Gradually stir in the milk until a dough forms.
  6. Once the beef mixture is ready, drop spoonfuls of the dumpling dough onto the surface of the beef mixture.
  7. Cover the skillet with a lid and reduce the heat to low, letting the dumplings steam for around 15 minutes.
  8. After 15 minutes, check for doneness; the dumplings should be fluffy. Let them sit uncovered for an additional five minutes for optimal texture.
  9. Serve hot and enjoy a delightful meal that warms your heart and fills your belly!

Notes

For the best flavor, consider browning the beef well. You can add chopped carrots or bell peppers for more texture and flavor. For a lighter version, substitute with ground turkey or chicken.
