  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • Pinch of salt
  • For the royal icing:
  • 1 egg white
  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp lemon juice
  • Fondant flowers (store-bought or homemade)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Cream the unsalted butter and powdered sugar in a large bowl until smooth and fluffy.
  3. Incorporate the egg and vanilla extract into the creamy mixture.
  4. Sift together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and a pinch of salt in another bowl.
  5. Gradually add the dry blend to the wet ingredients, mixing until combined.
  6. Roll the dough to about 1/4-inch thickness on a lightly floured surface.
  7. Use a heart-shaped cookie cutter to cut out cookies and place them on a baking sheet.
  8. Bake for 8-10 minutes or until the edges are golden brown.
  9. Cool the cookies completely on a wire rack.
  10. Beat the egg white with powdered sugar and lemon juice until stiff peaks form for the royal icing.
  11. Pipe the icing onto each cookie, creating smooth surfaces.
  12. Decorate with fondant flowers after the icing has set.

Use room temperature ingredients for better mixing and ensure dough is chilled before rolling. Allow royal icing to dry completely before adding fondant.
