Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup salted caramel sauce
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened (for frosting)
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup salted caramel sauce (for frosting)
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract (for frosting)
  • A pinch of salt (for frosting)
  • 2 tbsp heavy cream (for frosting)
  • Extra salted caramel sauce (for garnish)
  • Coarse sea salt (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a 12-cup muffin tin with cupcake liners.
  2. Whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a medium bowl.
  3. Beat the softened butter and granulated sugar together in a large bowl until light and fluffy.
  4. Add the eggs one at a time, ensuring each is well combined before adding the next. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients alternately with the buttermilk and milk, starting and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix just until combined.
  6. Fold in the salted caramel sauce gently to the batter.
  7. Divide the batter among the cupcake liners, filling each about two-thirds full.
  8. Bake for 18-20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  9. Let the cupcakes cool in the tin for 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
  10. For the frosting, beat together the softened butter, powdered sugar, salted caramel sauce, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt until smooth and creamy. Add heavy cream to adjust the consistency, if needed.
  11. Frost the completely cooled cupcakes generously with the caramel buttercream and garnish with additional salted caramel sauce and a sprinkle of coarse sea salt.

Notes

Use room temperature ingredients for best texture. Consider adding crushed pretzels on top for an extra crunch.
