A comforting dish featuring creamy mashed potatoes topped with rich ground beef gravy, perfect for busy weeknights or family gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 pounds russet or Yukon gold potatoes
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • Water, as needed

Instructions

  1. Boil the Potatoes: Begin by filling a medium-sized pot with water and adding a pinch of salt. Bring the water to a rolling boil before adding the cut potatoes. Cook for about 7 to 8 minutes, or until they’re tender when pierced with a fork.
  2. Prepare Butter and Milk Mixture: While the potatoes boil, take a small saucepan and combine 3 tablespoons of butter with 1/2 cup of whole milk over medium heat until the butter melts, creating a smooth, creamy mixture.
  3. Drain and Dry the Potatoes: Once cooked, drain the potatoes thoroughly. Return them to the pot, allowing them to steam dry for a minute.
  4. Mash the Potatoes: Using a potato masher or a fork, mash the potatoes until smooth. Stir in the melted butter-milk mixture and season with salt, garlic powder, and black pepper to taste.
  5. Prepare the Gravy: In a small bowl, mix 2 tablespoons of cornstarch with 1/4 cup of beef broth until smooth.
  6. Cook the Ground Beef: In a skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef until it’s browned and cooked through.
  7. Add Seasonings and Broth: Once the beef is ready, add the chopped onion, garlic powder, remaining 1 3/4 cups of beef broth, salt, and black pepper. Let this simmer gently for 5 to 10 minutes.
  8. Thicken the Gravy: Whisk in the cornstarch mixture and bring the gravy to a boil, cooking for an additional 2 minutes until thickened.
  9. Serve: Divide creamy mashed potatoes among bowls and generously top with the seasoned ground beef and gravy. Enjoy immediately!
