Indulge in the warmth of soft, gooey cinnamon rolls, filled with a buttery cinnamon-sugar filling and topped with rich cream cheese icing.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 packet active dry yeast (2 1/4 tsp)
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 3/4 cup warm milk (110°F)
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 2 tbsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted (for spreading)
  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract (for icing)
  • 2 tbsp milk (for icing)

Instructions

  1. Begin by preparing the yeast mixture. In a small bowl, combine the warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Stir gently until the yeast dissolves and set aside for 5 minutes until bubbly.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Pour in the yeast mixture along with the softened butter, egg, and vanilla extract. Stir the ingredients until they come together to form a dough.
  3. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Once kneaded, place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover it with a damp towel, and let it rise in a warm spot for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  5. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  6. After the dough has risen, punch it down to release the air. Roll it out into a rectangle about 16×12 inches on a floured surface.
  7. Brush the surface of the dough with melted butter, followed by an even sprinkle of brown sugar and ground cinnamon.
  8. Starting from one edge of the rectangle, roll the dough tightly to form a log and slice the log into 12 even pieces.
  9. Place the sliced rolls into the prepared baking dish, ensuring they are close together.
  10. Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.
  11. While the rolls are baking, prepare the cream cheese icing by beating together softened cream cheese, powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and milk until smooth.
  12. Once the cinnamon rolls are baked and have cooled slightly, generously spread the cream cheese icing on top and serve warm.

Notes

For added flavor, consider adding chopped nuts or a touch of nutmeg to the filling.
