A decadent twist on a classic breakfast dish, merging the rich flavors of crème brûlée with perfectly toasted bread.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 loaf of thick bread (such as brioche or challah)
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar (for caramelizing)
  • Optional toppings: fresh berries, whipped cream, maple syrup

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, heavy cream, milk, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, and salt until combined.
  3. Slice the bread into thick slices and arrange them in a greased baking dish.
  4. Pour the custard mixture over the bread, pressing down to ensure each slice is soaked.
  5. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or overnight.
  6. Remove the dish from the refrigerator, sprinkle the top with brown sugar, and bake for 30-35 minutes.
  7. For extra texture, use a kitchen torch to caramelize the brown sugar until bubbly and golden.
  8. Serve warm with optional toppings like fresh berries, whipped cream, or maple syrup.

Notes

For added flavor, consider soaking raisins or adding spices like cinnamon or nutmeg to the custard.
