A luxurious dessert featuring layers of chocolate cake, creamy chocolate pudding, and sweet cherry filling, topped with whipped cream.

  • 1 box chocolate cake mix
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 box instant chocolate pudding mix
  • 2 cups cold milk
  • 1 can (15 oz) cherry pie filling
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Dark chocolate shavings or chocolate chips
  • Fresh cherries (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to the temperature specified on the chocolate cake mix package.
  2. Prepare the chocolate cake according to the package directions, mixing together the chocolate cake mix, water, vegetable oil, and eggs.
  3. Pour the batter into a 9-inch round cake pan.
  4. Bake the cake as per the instructions and allow it to cool completely on a wire rack.
  5. Cut the cooled cake into bite-sized cubes.
  6. Whisk together the instant pudding mix and cold milk until it thickens.
  7. Pour the heavy cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract into a large mixing bowl and whip until soft peaks form.
  8. Assemble the trifle in a large dish, starting with cake cubes, followed by chocolate pudding, and then cherry pie filling, repeating layers and ending with whipped cream.
  9. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, preferably overnight.

Notes

Chilling the trifle overnight allows flavors to meld beautifully. Use healthier alternatives for a lighter version.
