A comforting pizza pie filled with gooey cheese, savory sausage, and a robust tomato sauce, all in a thick crust.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water (110°F/45°C)
  • 2 teaspoons sugar
  • 3 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 1 pound Italian sausage, cooked and crumbled
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 cups canned tomato puree
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
  • Additional olive oil for greasing the pan

Instructions

  1. Activate the yeast by dissolving it in warm water with sugar. Let it stand until frothy, about 5 to 10 minutes.
  2. Mix flour and salt in a bowl. Make a well in the center, add the yeast mixture, and drizzle in the olive oil. Stir until combined.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for 6-8 minutes until it is smooth and elastic.
  4. Let the dough rise in a lightly oiled bowl covered with a damp cloth for 1-2 hours until it has doubled in size.
  5. Preheat the oven to 475°F (245°C). Grease a deep-dish pizza pan liberally with olive oil.
  6. Punch down the risen dough to release the air, then transfer it to the greased pan.
  7. Layer half of the mozzarella cheese over the crust, followed by crumbled sausage and the remaining mozzarella.
  8. Prepare the sauce by mixing tomato puree, tomato paste, oregano, basil, garlic powder, onion powder, and crushed red pepper flakes.
  9. Spread the sauce evenly over the cheese layer.
  10. Sprinkle grated Parmesan cheese over the sauce.
  11. Bake for 25-30 minutes until the crust is golden brown, and the cheese is bubbly.
  12. Cool for 5 minutes before slicing and serving.

Notes

Ensure that your water is at the right temperature to activate the yeast properly. Be patient with rising time for the best texture.
