Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef (85% lean)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 and 1/2 cups beef broth
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1/2 cup frozen peas or mixed vegetables (optional)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour (for dumplings)
  • 1 and 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • Pinch of salt (for dumplings)
  • 1 tablespoon softened butter
  • 1/2 cup milk (whole or 2%)

Instructions

  1. Brown the ground beef in a large skillet over medium heat until it’s no longer pink.
  2. Sauté the diced onion in the same skillet until soft and translucent, about 4 minutes.
  3. Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.
  4. Mix in the tomato paste, cooking for about a minute.
  5. Sprinkle the flour over the beef mixture and stir.
  6. Pour in the beef broth gradually while stirring continuously.
  7. Add thyme, paprika, salt, and pepper, then let it simmer for 8 to 10 minutes until slightly thickened.
  8. Prepare the dumplings by whisking together the flour, baking powder, and salt in a separate bowl.
  9. Incorporate the softened butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  10. Stir in the milk until a soft dough forms.
  11. Drop spoonfuls of the dumpling dough onto the beef mixture.
  12. Cover the skillet with a lid and reduce the heat to low, steaming the dumplings for about 15 minutes.
  13. Check for doneness; the dumplings should be fluffy and cooked through.
  14. Allow to sit uncovered for an additional 5 minutes, then serve hot.

Notes

To enhance flavor, consider browning the beef well and using lean ground meat alternatives. Avoid overmixing dumpling dough for best texture.
