Delightful heart-shaped pastries filled with creamy custard and topped with fresh cherries, perfect for any celebration.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 sheet puff pastry
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/4 cup whole milk
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large egg yolks
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • Fresh cherries, pitted and halved
  • Powdered sugar (for dusting, optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Roll out the puff pastry sheet on a floured surface until it’s about 1/8 inch thick. Cut out heart shapes with a cookie cutter.
  3. Whisk together the egg yolks, granulated sugar, and cornstarch in a medium bowl until smooth.
  4. Warm the heavy cream and whole milk in a saucepan over medium heat until just heated through.
  5. Pour the warm milk mixture into the egg yolk mixture, whisking continuously to temper the eggs.
  6. Return the mixture to the saucepan and cook over medium-low heat, whisking until thickened (about 5-7 minutes).
  7. Stir in the vanilla extract and let the custard cool slightly.
  8. Spoon the cooled custard onto the center of each puff pastry heart, leaving a border.
  9. Bake in the oven for 12-15 minutes until golden brown and puffed.
  10. Top each pastry with cherry halves and dust with powdered sugar if desired.

Notes

Ensure puff pastry is cold before rolling out for best flakiness. Don’t overcrowd the baking sheet to allow pastries to rise beautifully.
