Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm milk
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 large eggs
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • 1 cup granulated sugar for coating

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, combine the warm milk and active dry yeast. Let sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, and salt. Add melted butter, eggs, and the yeast mixture; mix until a soft dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm area for 1-2 hours until doubled in size.
  5. Roll out the dough to ½-inch thickness. Use a heart-shaped cutter to cut out the donuts and place them on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  6. Cover shaped donuts with a towel and let them rest for an additional 30 minutes.
  7. Heat vegetable oil in a deep pan to 350°F (175°C).
  8. Fry each donut for about 1-2 minutes on each side or until golden brown.
  9. While warm, roll the donuts in granulated sugar until coated.
  10. Serve and enjoy warm, alone or with a beverage.

Notes

Consider adding cinnamon to the sugar coating for extra flavor. You can experiment with toppings like sprinkles or melted chocolate.
