  • 1/2 cup white granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup white granulated sugar (for fudge sauce)
  • 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 3 tablespoons cocoa powder (for fudge sauce)
  • 11/4 cups boiling water

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Prepare your baking pan by lightly greasing a 9-inch square pan.
  3. Boil the water in a kettle.
  4. Whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt in a bowl.
  5. Add milk, melted butter, and vanilla extract to the dry mixture, whisking until smooth.
  6. Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan.
  7. Mix the sugar (for fudge sauce), brown sugar, and cocoa powder in another bowl and sprinkle it over the batter.
  8. Pour the boiling water evenly over the top of the batter without stirring.
  9. Bake for about 35 minutes.
  10. Cool for 15 minutes before serving, optionally with ice cream or whipped cream.
