A nostalgic dish combining juicy beef patties, caramelized onions, and gooey Swiss cheese encased in crispy rye bread.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef (80% lean)
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 4 slices rye bread
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese
  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Start by caramelizing the onions: In a medium skillet, heat 1 tablespoon of butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and sauté until they are golden and caramelized, approximately 12-15 minutes. Once done, remove the onions from heat and set them aside.
  2. Prepare the patties: While the onions are cooking, form the ground beef into two large patties, making sure they are slightly larger than your bread. Season both sides generously with salt and pepper to enhance the flavor.
  3. Cook the patties: Heat a separate skillet or grill over medium-high heat. Cook the patties for about 3-4 minutes on each side, adjusting the time according to your preferred level of doneness. Aim for a nice sear on the outside for maximum flavor.
  4. Mix the secret sauce: In a small mixing bowl, combine mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper. Stir well until all ingredients are fully incorporated to create your creamy secret sauce.
  5. Prepare the bread: Butter one side of each slice of rye bread, ensuring even coverage. Place the slices, butter-side-down, in the skillet to toast.
  6. Assemble the melt: Spread a generous amount of the secret sauce on the unbuttered side of each slice. Top with a slice of Swiss cheese, then add the cooked patty, a layer of caramelized onions, and another slice of Swiss cheese.
  7. Finish the sandwich: Top with the second slice of rye bread, making sure the buttered side is facing up.
  8. Grill it to perfection: Grill the sandwich for 3-4 minutes on each side until the bread is golden brown and crispy, and the cheese is melted to perfection. Don’t forget to press down slightly with a spatula for an even grill.
  9. Serve and enjoy: Slice the Ultimate Patty Melt in half for easy eating, serve immediately, and savor every bite!

Notes

Use a cast-iron skillet for even heat distribution. Allow ground beef to sit at room temperature for 30 minutes before cooking for best results.
