A delightful and crispy treat, Easy Popcorn Shrimp features tender shrimp coated in a perfectly seasoned, crunchy exterior, making it a family favorite and a perfect appetizer.

  • 1 lb small raw shrimp
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 tsp hot sauce
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 0.33 cup cornstarch
  • 0.5 cup fine cornmeal
  • 0.75 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • 1.5 tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 0.25 tsp cayenne pepper
  • 0.5 tsp baking powder
  • 1.25 tsp kosher salt (divided)
  • 0.5 tsp black pepper
  • 3 cups vegetable oil (for frying)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the shrimp – Rinse the small raw shrimp under cold water and pat dry.
  2. Marinate the shrimp – Combine shrimp with buttermilk and hot sauce, allowing to marinate for 15-20 minutes.
  3. Create the coating – Mix together flour, cornstarch, cornmeal, breadcrumbs, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper, baking powder, and half the salt.
  4. Heat the oil – Heat vegetable oil in a skillet to around 350°F (175°C).
  5. Coat the shrimp – Coat marinated shrimp in the flour mixture, pressing gently for an even layer.
  6. Fry the shrimp – Fry coated shrimp in small batches for 2-3 minutes on each side until golden brown.
  7. Drain and serve – Transfer cooked shrimp to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil and serve hot with your favorite dipping sauce.

Fry in small batches to maintain oil temperature for perfect crispiness.
