Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 packet active dry yeast (2 1/4 tsp)
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 3/4 cup warm milk (110°F)
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 2 tbsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted (for spreading)
  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract (for icing)
  • 2 tbsp milk (for icing)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the yeast mixture. In a small bowl, combine warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Stir until the yeast dissolves and set aside for 5 minutes until bubbly.
  2. Combine flour and salt in a large mixing bowl. Pour in the yeast mixture along with softened butter, egg, and vanilla extract. Stir to form a dough.
  3. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp towel, and let it rise for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  5. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  6. After the dough has risen, punch it down and roll it into a rectangle (16×12 inches).
  7. Brush the dough with melted butter, then sprinkle with brown sugar and cinnamon.
  8. Roll the dough tightly from one edge to form a log, then slice into 12 pieces.
  9. Place the rolls in the prepared baking dish.
  10. Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.
  11. Prepare the icing by beating cream cheese, powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and milk until smooth.
  12. Spread the cream cheese icing on the warm cinnamon rolls and serve.

Notes

For extra flavor in your icing, consider adding a pinch of salt or splash of lemon juice.
