A mouthwatering delight that combines savory beef, gooey cheese, and caramelized onions, all sandwiched between crispy rye bread.

  • 1 lb ground beef (80% lean)
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 4 slices rye bread
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese
  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Heat 1 tablespoon of butter in a medium skillet over medium heat. Add sliced onions and sauté until golden and caramelized, about 12-15 minutes. Remove onions from heat and set aside.
  2. Form the ground beef into two large patties. Season both sides generously with salt and pepper.
  3. Heat a separate skillet or grill over medium-high heat. Cook patties for about 3-4 minutes on each side, adjusting time to your preferred doneness.
  4. Combine mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper in a small mixing bowl to create the secret sauce.
  5. Butter one side of each slice of rye bread and place them, butter-side-down, in the skillet.
  6. Assemble the patty melt: Spread secret sauce on unbuttered side of each slice. Place Swiss cheese on top, followed by a cooked patty, caramelized onions, and another slice of Swiss cheese.
  7. Top with the second slice of rye bread, buttered side facing up.
  8. Grill the sandwich for 3-4 minutes on each side until bread is golden brown and crispy and cheese is melted.

Notes

For extra flavor, consider seasoning the beef patties with garlic or onion powder. You can also add toppings like sautéed mushrooms or jalapeños.
