  • 2 3/4 cups (345g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup (225g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup (150g) granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp almond extract (optional)
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 4 cups (480g) powdered sugar
  • 3 tbsp meringue powder
  • 56 tbsp water
  • White gel food coloring
  • Gold edible paint or luster dust
  • Small gold sugar pearls

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. Cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Add the egg, vanilla, and optional almond extract, mixing until fully incorporated.
  4. Whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt in a separate bowl.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing until a smooth dough forms.
  6. Divide the dough into two portions for easier handling.
  7. Roll out each portion between two sheets of parchment paper to about 1/4-inch thickness.
  8. Use a cookie cutter to cut out holly-shaped cookies and transfer them to the prepared baking sheets.
  9. Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden.
  10. Allow the cookies to cool completely on the baking sheets.
  11. Whisk together the powdered sugar, meringue powder, and water for royal icing.
  12. Add a few drops of white gel food coloring to the icing.
  13. Once cooled, decorate each cookie with royal icing.
  14. Brush the edges with gold edible paint or luster dust and add sugar pearls.
  15. Allow the icing to dry completely before serving.

Notes

Ensure your butter is adequately softened for best results. Chill the dough if it becomes sticky.
