  • 2 tablespoons red food coloring
  • 1 teaspoon white vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for frosting)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. Whisk together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, baking soda, salt, and cocoa powder in a large mixing bowl.
  3. Combine the vegetable oil, buttermilk, eggs, red food coloring, white vinegar, and vanilla extract in a separate bowl.
  4. Fold the wet ingredients into the dry mixture, mixing gently until just combined.
  5. Divide the batter evenly between the two prepared cake pans.
  6. Bake for 25-30 minutes; check for doneness with a toothpick.
  7. Cool the cakes in their pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  8. Beat the softened cream cheese and unsalted butter until smooth and creamy for the frosting.
  9. Add the powdered sugar and vanilla extract, continuing to beat until light and fluffy.
  10. Frost one cake layer on your serving plate, then add frosting between layers and around the sides.
  11. Decorate as desired with sprinkles or edible flowers.
